Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can close off the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. This will also stop critters and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to level sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at tracking down those issues. We can utilize a repair solution that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
