Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were built with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. This will also stop bugs and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to lift sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, normally they will present themselves as diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at spotting these problems. We can implement a repair product intended for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
