Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can seal the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also stop pests and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to level sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at evaluating these issues. We can implement a repair product intended for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a settling foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
