Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, these were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop pests and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we can install a system of floor jacks to repair sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, usually, they will show themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows and doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at spotting these issues. We can implement a repair solution that is for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a settling foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
