Crawl Space Solutions
In Virginia Beach, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, these were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
We have been encapsulating crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the building itself but it also is the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at evaluating these problems. We can implement a repair product designed for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a settling foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
