Crawl Space Solutions
In Virginia Beach, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were built with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to lift sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that your doors will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at noticing those issues. We can implement a repair product intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a uneven foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
