Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also stop critters and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a series of floor jacks to lift sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will present themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the doors and windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at evaluating these issues. We can offer a repair product designed for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a uneven foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
