Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For many years, they were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also stop critters and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we can install a series of floor jacks to level sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows or doors will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at tracking down those issues. We can offer a repair solution that is for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a uneven foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
