In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
