Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. This will also stop rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also is the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as diagonal cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at tracking down these problems. We can utilize a repair product designed for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a sloping foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
