Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were built with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent rodents and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at evaluating these problems. We can offer a repair product intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a settling foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
