Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. This will also stop rodents and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors or windows will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem serious at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at noticing these problems. We can implement a repair product intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sloping foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
