Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces and not basements. For many years, these were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control high humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent bugs and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is protected, if you need it we can install a series of floor jacks to repair sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of the most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at tracking down those issues. We can utilize a repair product intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
