Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop bugs and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a series of floor jacks to level sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally present themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at evaluating these issues. We can offer a repair product intended for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
