Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were created with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent pests and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a system of floor jacks to lift sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves as stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at noticing these problems. We can implement a repair solution designed for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sinking foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
