Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a series of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as stair stepping cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that your windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem serious at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at tracking down those issues. We can implement a repair solution that is for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sloping foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
