Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent pests and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a series of floor jacks to level sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally present themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at noticing these problems. We can offer a repair product that is for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sloping foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
