Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were created with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows or doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at spotting those problems. We can offer a repair product intended for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a sloping foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
