Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas and not basements. For many years, they were built with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent pests and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, normally they will show themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that the doors and windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at spotting these issues. We can implement a repair solution designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sloping foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
