Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, these were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to seal them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in your brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at tracking down those issues. We can implement a repair solution that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a settling foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
