Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces and not basements. For many years, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can seal the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent pests and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a series of floor jacks to level sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at evaluating these issues. We can utilize a repair product intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
