Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, these were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will seal the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a series of floor jacks to lift sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves as stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at evaluating these problems. We can offer a repair solution designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a settling foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
