Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the weather and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. This will also stop bugs and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a series of floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves as diagonal cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at spotting these problems. We can offer a repair product designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
