Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, these were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop rodents and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a series of floor jacks to repair sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, usually, they will show themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your windows will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at tracking down these problems. We can implement a repair solution intended for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a settling foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
