Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working on crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is closed off, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at noticing these problems. We can utilize a repair product intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a uneven foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
