Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For many years, they were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to repair sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, usually, they will show themselves as stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the doors and windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at tracking down these issues. We can offer a repair product intended for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sinking foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
