Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can seal the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop rodents and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at evaluating these issues. We can implement a repair product designed for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a uneven foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
