Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were built with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to seal them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent pests and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as stair-step cracks in your brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at tracking down these problems. We can utilize a repair product that is for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
