Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas and not basements. For many years, these were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a series of floor jacks to repair sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, normally they will present themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that the doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at tracking down these problems. We can utilize a repair product intended for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
