Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For many years, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop bugs and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors and windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at spotting these issues. We can implement a repair product that is for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a settling foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
