Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas and not basements. For many years, they were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. This will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a series of floor jacks to lift sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as stair-step cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at noticing those problems. We can offer a repair product intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
