Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces and not basements. For a long time, they were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can seal the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, normally they will present themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at tracking down those problems. We can utilize a repair product that is for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sloping foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
