Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop bugs and animals from settling in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to lift sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that your doors will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at evaluating those problems. We can implement a repair product intended for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sloping foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
