In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage.
