Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For a long time, they were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to lift sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors or windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at noticing those problems. We can offer a repair solution designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a settling foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
