Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent critters and animals from settling in your crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a series of floor jacks to level sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of the most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that the doors or windows will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at noticing these problems. We can utilize a repair solution designed for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sinking foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
