Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, they were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the weather and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can seal the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent pests and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will show themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at tracking down these issues. We can implement a repair solution that is for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a uneven foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
