In our area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For many years, they were built with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. This will also prevent pests and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage.
