Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces and not basements. For a long time, these were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent bugs and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of the most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, usually, they will show themselves as stair-step cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for particular problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at noticing these problems. We can implement a repair solution that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a settling foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
