Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For a long time, they were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors or windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at evaluating these issues. We can utilize a repair product intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a settling foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
