Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas and not basements. For many years, these were built with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at noticing those problems. We can implement a repair solution that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a settling foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
