Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas and not basements. For a long time, they were constructed with vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop critters and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to level sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows and doors will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at tracking down these issues. We can utilize a repair product that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a uneven foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
