Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were built with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can seal the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if you need it we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves as stair stepping cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors or windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at evaluating those issues. We can utilize a repair solution that is for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a settling foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
