Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. This will also prevent rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to repair sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, normally they will present themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at noticing those issues. We can utilize a repair product designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a sloping foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
