Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were built with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
We have been dealing with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent pests and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a series of floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves as stair-step cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at evaluating these issues. We can implement a repair solution designed for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
