Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For a long time, they were built with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. This will also prevent pests and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of the most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, normally they will present themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the doors or windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at evaluating those problems. We can implement a repair product intended for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a sinking foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
