Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were constructed with vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent bugs and animals from settling in your crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to level sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as stair stepping cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that your doors or windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at noticing those issues. We can offer a repair product that is for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a settling foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
