Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For many years, these were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working with crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can seal the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to level sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will present themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at evaluating those issues. We can implement a repair product intended for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a settling foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
