Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, they were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent pests and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at noticing those issues. We can utilize a repair solution intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a sloping foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
