Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For many years, these were created with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to seal them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent bugs and animals from settling in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to level sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally show themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at tracking down those issues. We can utilize a repair product designed for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a sloping foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
