Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, these were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent pests and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will present themselves as stair-step cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors or windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at noticing these issues. We can utilize a repair product designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a settling foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
