Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were constructed with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. This will also prevent pests and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves as stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors and windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at evaluating those problems. We can implement a repair solution intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a sinking foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
