Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent rodents and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to level sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, usually, they will show themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors and windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at tracking down those issues. We can offer a repair solution that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a uneven foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
