Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop pests and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at noticing those problems. We can utilize a repair solution intended for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sloping foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
