Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For a long time, these were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. This will also prevent bugs and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at noticing these issues. We can implement a repair product intended for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a uneven foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
