Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were built with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will seal the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop critters and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we will install a series of floor jacks to lift sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at tracking down these problems. We can implement a repair product that is for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a uneven foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
