Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control high humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will seal the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent pests and animals from settling in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if you need it we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to level sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as stair-step cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at noticing those issues. We can offer a repair solution intended for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sinking foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
