Crawl Space Solutions
In Cape Charles, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, they were constructed with vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop pests and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at noticing those issues. We can offer a repair solution that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sloping foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
