Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For a long time, they were created with vents which was intended to increase air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop pests and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as diagonal cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors or windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at tracking down those issues. We can offer a repair solution that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
