Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For many years, they were created with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the weather and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of the most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that the doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at evaluating those issues. We can utilize a repair product intended for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a sinking foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
