Crawl Space Solutions
In Cape Charles, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces and not basements. For many years, they were built with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to seal them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can close off the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from settling in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at tracking down those problems. We can implement a repair product that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sinking foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
