Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, they were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent critters and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally present themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in your brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors or windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at spotting these issues. We can offer a repair solution designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sinking foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
