Crawl Space Solutions
In Birdsnest, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas and not basements. For a long time, these were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop pests and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to lift sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows or doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at evaluating these issues. We can utilize a repair solution that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sinking foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
