Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For a long time, these were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will seal the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop rodents and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, usually, they will show themselves as stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that the windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem critical at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at tracking down those problems. We can utilize a repair solution designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sloping foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
