Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were built with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can seal the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows or doors will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at tracking down those issues. We can offer a repair product intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sloping foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
