Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to level sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, usually, they will show themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at noticing those issues. We can implement a repair solution intended for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a uneven foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
