Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent rodents and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally show themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at spotting those issues. We can utilize a repair solution designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sloping foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
