Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were built with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to repair sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at spotting those problems. We can offer a repair solution intended for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a sloping foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
