Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For a long time, they were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of the most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, normally they will present themselves as stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your doors or windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at evaluating those issues. We can utilize a repair product intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sloping foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
