Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, they were constructed with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can close off the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. This will also stop pests and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in your brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors and windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at evaluating these issues. We can offer a repair product intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a settling foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
