Crawl Space Solutions
In Battery Park, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For a long time, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent bugs and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as diagonal cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at spotting those problems. We can offer a repair solution intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a uneven foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
