Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, they were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can close off the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop critters and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we can install a series of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in your brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at noticing these issues. We can offer a repair solution designed for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sloping foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
