Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been encapsulating crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent critters and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to level sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves as stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at spotting these problems. We can offer a repair product intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a sloping foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
