Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, they were built with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent critters and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a series of floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as stair stepping cracks in your brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at spotting these issues. We can offer a repair product that is for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sinking foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
