Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, they were created with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent critters and animals from settling in the crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows or doors will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at spotting these issues. We can utilize a repair solution that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sloping foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
