Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas and not basements. For many years, these were created with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop pests and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to level sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at spotting those problems. We can offer a repair product designed for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
