Crawl Space Solutions
In Accomac, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will seal the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is closed off, if you need it we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of the most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem critical at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at spotting these issues. We can implement a repair product that is for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a uneven foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
