Crawl Space Solutions
In Accomac, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. This will also prevent critters and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, usually, they will show themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows or doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at spotting those problems. We can implement a repair solution intended for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sinking foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
