Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For a long time, they were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been helping customers with their crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop pests and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally show themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in your brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at noticing these issues. We can utilize a repair product intended for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sloping foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
