Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas and not basements. For many years, these were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at noticing those problems. We can utilize a repair product designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a sloping foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
