Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were constructed with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will seal the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop bugs and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at evaluating these issues. We can utilize a repair product that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a settling foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
