Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, these were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a series of floor jacks to repair sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, they will generally show themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems and determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at spotting those problems. We can implement a repair product intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a uneven foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
